Islamabad (Times of PK) – A 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck Pakistan in the early hours of Saturday, August 2, 2025, at 03:01:40 AM (PKT). The tremors were widely felt across Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Mardan, Azad Kashmir, and multiple districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab.

According to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC), Islamabad, the epicenter was located in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan, with a depth of 102 kilometers. Despite the noticeable tremors, no loss of life or property damage was reported from any region.

Affected Areas Include:

Islamabad

Rawalpindi

Mardan

Azad Kashmir

Peshawar, Swat, Haripur, Abbottabad

Charsadda, Mansehra, Shangla, Malakand

Lahore, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Kasur, Sargodha

Multiple areas of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) and US Geological Survey (USGS) both confirmed the seismic activity and ruled out any immediate threat of aftershocks.

Scientific Insight

The earthquake originated in the tectonically active Hindu Kush mountain range, a well-known seismic zone where the Indian and Eurasian plates collide. Such deep-focus quakes often affect a broad area without causing surface-level devastation.

Visual Reporting Ethics

Since no structural damage or injuries occurred, sensational images of destruction are not suitable. Instead, scientific imagery such as seismographs or visual representations of seismic waves are recommended to reflect the nature of the event accurately.

A representative seismograph image can be sourced from USGS (public domain) and used for ethical and copyright-free news reporting.
